Hello! My name is David Elacqua, and I’m the drum major of the Colgate Pep Band. I’m a first year from Utica, NY. I usually play the clarinet in the pep band, but I’ll be conducting this year. I’m considering a double major in molecular biology and music, but I do not have to declare until my sophomore year. In addition to Pep Band, I am a member of the Colgate University Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Colgate Ballroom Dancers.
As the drum major, my job is to conduct our biweekly practices and make sure we sound great for our performances at sporting events. I also help out in band camp with the other officers. In high school, I was very involved with music. I played in my high school’s band as well as with the symphonic orchestra. I also played in my school’s pit orchestra for our annual musicals. In my high school’s band, we were required to play at football games and parades because we didn’t have a marching band. Although I wasn’t a big fan of the uniforms in hot weather, I really enjoyed playing music with my friends at these games and I knew that I wanted to continue this in college. Joining the Pep Band at Colgate gave me the opportunity to continue playing and was definitely one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. Coming into band camp was nerve-racking at first because living away from home was very new to me, but everyone in the Pep Band was so welcoming and made my adjustment to college life much easier.
So far, most of my very good friends on campus are people I met through Pep Band. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to send me an email! If you are interested in the Pep Band, please sign up and join the best club on campus!
